New Media In Foreign Language Education

5 Questions with Reference to the Use of Media in School

In order to have our first school trip to Martin-Luther-Schule in Marburg next week, I remembered a task from the last year, were I had to interview a student of an other school about his use of the new media in every day school life. I think it might be interesting to read the answers of the student and, after that, get the information about the use of the new media at the Martin-Luther-School. Here I give you the 5 interview questions I had to create and the answers, the pupil gave to me.

  1.     Do you have any special media rooms at your school?

Yes, there are three of them. The two big ones are used when whole classes do an internet or a software beased task. The small one is restricted for SEK II pupils. This room is open for them at any time but they have to sign thereselfs in on a list to make sure that the equipment is used properly.

  2.     So pupils of the SEK I do not have all time access to one of the computer

                labs?

No, we do not. We only have access to the lab when our teacher accompanies us. The teacher has to book the room and sometimes we have to share it with another class. So we do partner-working by sitting in pairs in front of one computer.

  3.    How often do you use the computer lab?

Last school year, we had a pen pal project with our partner school in Wisconsin. According to this, we had four lessons held in the computerlab where we had to write e-mails to our pen pals. Apart from that, I had all in all maybe about ten lessons in the lab.

  4.    What other kind of media do your teachers use in their lessons?

The media use during the lessons is depending on the teacher. Most of them are old and do only use the blackboard. In the majority of cases, it is something very special when one of them uses the overhead projector. The younger teachers use more different media. They often use the beamer to show us a movie or a powerpoint presentation. In my opinion, these lessons are the most interesting ones.

  5.    Do you wish to have more lessons in the computer lab?

Definitely! But only if it is provided that we do more interesting and more needful stuff than "pen palling“. I mean, it is very cool to get to know others pupils in America, but anyone of us knows, how to write an e-mail. There are so many interesting things you can do with a computer! For example, we had to do a presentation and one of us is a real crack in Power Point. With his help, we were able to design a presentation that really rocked. There are so many features in this software that I would wish we could have an introduction to it. That would make things much easier and we would not need a couple of hours to design a presentation properly.
